It's Summer - Yippee!!

Tuesday, 19th July, 2016 - By Barbara Barnes

As this is being written we are in the middle of a mini heat wave, which may only last until tomorrow – but it’s glorious for locals and visitors alike.  When we are at Truthall Summit it’s lovely to see the sun shining off the sea at Porthleven, and some volunteers are there a lot at the moment as we are pressing on with restoring the station at Truthall Halt that we had to pause whilst funding our planning applications.

So Truthall is the main area of work currently.  The track team – always on the lookout for the opportunity to extend the line – have laid some more panels and are now within arms length of the site of the platform.  Those of you who have been watching for a while will know that the drainage here has been a problem and we have often had a mini lake on the track bed after heavy rain.  So another main element has been to put in the drainage infrastructure necessary to make sure that doesn’t happen again.

We have also been blessed with the support of Cornwall College who have agreed to let us have their building skills group placement with us for a short while – and they are giving us much needed help in working at that end of the line – so far they have re-pointed a bridge, will be helping with the drainage project and it is rumoured will be building a fireplace and chimney for the platelayers hut that we are reconstructing.

And what about our visitors?  Well its summer and the schools have broken up so we are opening on the next two Wednesdays, as well as the usual Thursday and Sunday – and are also planning to open on Wednesdays in August as well – watch the home page for confirmation.  We have had a super set of visitors this year – and many congratulations on getting the planning approved at last.  Our shop, with its new product ranges, is doing well and the buffet girls were chuffed that someone asked them last week for a “world famous bacon butty”. Smiles all round.

Finally for all you members and heritage railway buffs – great news.  We have published our 5th edition of the Helston Railway Journal and they will be on sale in the next week at the railway and our on line shop.  Of course if you are a member of the Helston Railway Preservation Society you will be getting a free copy, along with your draw tickets for this years Grand Draw, and these will be posted to you shortly.  Draw tickets are also available from our shop at Prospidnick.  Our thanks to our Journal editor David Collings for what we think is the best edition yet!

Happy summer from a very happy railway.
